Summary
Melbourne produced its greatest win under Dean Bailey last round, when it smashed the Sydney Swans by 73 points. In the process, the Demons handed Paul Roos’ greatest defeat as Swans coach. It was a significant moment for Melbourne, after it fell short in its comeback against Fremantle at Subiaco Oval in round 16. Melbourne set up the win with 8.2 to 2.1 in the first quarter. It then put the icing on the cake with 8.4 in the third term, recording its best quarter for the year. The Demons have now won six and a half matches in 2010 and has suddenly shot into finals contention. The win also showed off Melbourne’s improving depth, considering the likes of James McDonald, Brent Moloney, Jack Grimes, Jack Trengove and Ricky Petterd were absent. Several football pundits have predicted an eighth-place finish for the Demons, but internally this hasn’t been the focus. On the flipside, the Lions have won just one match since winning the first four matches of the season. Although Melbourne is back on the road for the second time in three weeks - and is coming up against an out-of-form Lions - it will still be a massive challenge for the Dees, considering their poor winning record on the road.

Players to watch
Melbourne - James Frawley: The key defender continued his first-class season - and further pushed his All-Australian claims - with a career-best 27-disposal performance against the Swans last round. His run-and-chase down the MCG wing, which caused speedster Lewis Jetta to fumble, was a highlight of his game.

Brisbane Lions - Brendan Fevola: Although the boom recruit and reigning Coleman Medallist is equal fourth on the AFL goalkicking table, has 48 goals to his name and is averaging three goals per match, he has endured a frustrating few weeks. Fev has booted just nine goals from his past five appearances. But he still looms as a dangerous option for the Lions, particularly on home soil.

How’s stat?
If Melbourne defeats the Lions, it will be the first time under Dean Bailey it has defeated the same team twice in one season.

Memorable match
Round 5, 2010: Melbourne 15.13 (103) d Brisbane Lions 7.11 (53), MCG
Leading from the start, Melbourne defeated the then second placed Lions by 50 points. The Demons booted 9.6 to 3.6 in the first half and held the Lions goalless in the final term. It was Melbourne’s third win in succession, in front of an enthusiastic crowd of 36,396. The Demons had multiple goal scorers through Aaron Davey, Ricky Petterd, Jack Trengove and Colin Sylvia, while Brendan Fevola was the only Lion to achieve this feat. Brent Moloney had 31 disposals for the Dees.

What Dean says …
“If you look at their (the Lions) last couple of weeks they’ve gone to Launceston and also to Geelong, so they’ve had a couple of tough road trips and they now get a chance to play at home on Saturday night. We went down and watched them play against Geelong. I watched Jonathan Brown run around and he is moving really well. People might not think he moved particularly well last week against Geelong but they’ve got some really proud players and I’m sure the contest will be on and we need to be up for it.”

Key Melbourne question
Aside from its Darwin ‘home’ win against Port Adelaide in round nine, Melbourne has not won at a regular non-Victorian venue since round 14, 2006 - coincidentally against the Lions. Can the Demons break this hoodoo and win on the road?
