Scully ‘certain’ to sign with GWS
By Caroline Wilson

THE now-certain new partnership of Tom Scully and Greater Western Sydney has moved into its final stages, with the 20-year-old having been in contact with GWS in recent days and scheduled to tour the Giants' Blacktown headquarters tomorrow. Scully reportedly learned about a month ago of an official offer from the AFL's 18th club and while Melbourne has counter punched since then, the Demons 2009 priority pick has all but decided to move to Sydney. While all parties continue to insist no deal has been done, Scully's Velocity Management boss Alastair Lynch came close to revealing on Fox Sports two nights ago that Scully would make his decision to join the new club in coming days after a tour of the club.

Melbourne casts the net wide for senior coach
By Jake Niall

MINDFUL of not putting all its eggs into the Ross Lyon senior coaching basket, Melbourne will begin interviewing the ranks of assistant coaches for its senior coaching position. The Demons are believed to be casting the net wide, speaking to a number of assistant coaches, with Scott Burns, Mark Neeld, Leon Cameron, Brendan McCartney, Brenton Sanderson, Alan Richardson and Ken Hinkley likely to be on their radar, while they wait to see if there is any chance to secure their targeted senior coach, St Kilda's Lyon. The Demons are expected to speak to 8-10 candidates over the next week, ensuring that they are not left behind if they are unable to get the coach they want. They are also believed to have discussed the increasingly popular model of having a young untried coach supported by a former AFL coach. The support would depend, though, on the person appointed. ''We know who we want to talk to and we're going to be working our way through all that now,'' said Melbourne acting chairman Don McLardy. ''There's people involved in finals, there's all that sort of stuff, so we've got to be really careful that we're not doing the wrong thing by anybody … we're just working through everybody who we think fits into what we're looking for. ''You can't put a time frame on it because it's going to keep going until we've exhausted all our avenues really,'' he said. ''We've got sort of a framework that says what our preferred position is, but it depends who's available and who's not and all those sorts of things.'' ''The range of people we could have could go [from] a completely inexperienced coach, through to a really experienced coach.''

Scully next in line at GWS
By Peter Kogoy
KEVIN Sheedy proved as elusive as when he was running out of the backpocket for Richmond when asked if Melbourne champion Tom Scully would be joining the GWS Giants. On a day the Giants unveiled Callan Ward from the Western Bulldogs and Rhys Palmer from Fremantle as their first two official AFL-listed recruits yesterday -- with Port Adelaide veterans Dean Brogan and Chad Cornes to come, Sheedy ducked the Scully question. "Tom Scully is a very good player. If he decides to come up here, we'll be rapt," Sheedy said. "It will mean we'll have four or five boys here training already this year that are very capable of playing league footy next year, then all of sudden we have a dozen players (to pick from) in the midfield. Well if Tom Scully is one of them, so be it. I've never met Tom Scully but I hope I do meet him." Sheedy also admitted to never having met Ward or Palmer before the pair was introduced at the club's waterfront residential facility at Breakfast Point on the Parramatta River. "I've not met these boys before -- ever, and that's an actual fact," Sheedy said. But I'm glad we got them. These two players are very talented, strong over the ball and create plays and, for midfielders, also have good defensive skills."
