BALL movement coach Mark Williams runs through the 22 players who played in Melbourne’s loss against Port Adelaide at Adelaide Oval
Rohan Bail: Rohan’s tackling and pressure was very good. He was very solid on David Rodan and held him really well. Although Rodan kicked two goals, he had little influence on the game. Rohan turned defence into attack on several occasions by driving hard through the ball, and counter attacking at pace.
Clint Bartram: Clint did a great job on Travis Boak. As he’s done in previous weeks, he played his role for the team and gave everything he had. Boak kicked two freakish goals, but was well held. Barty’s last month was very good.
Matthew Bate: Matty had a really good game. He came into the side in great form and played several roles. He attacked the ball hard, won some good ground balls and was in-and-under at stoppage. Bater spent time up forward and in the midfield, and provided terrific attack away from stoppage.
Jamie Bennell: Again, JB was very solid in defence beating several opponents. Jamie’s offensive play needs to be his focus as, when he attacks, the game breaks open for us and we usually score.
Sam Blease: Sam was concussed early and had no impact on the game.
Jack Fitzpatrick: It was an exciting day for Fitzy. He played his first AFL match and involved himself in the game very well. He presented really well, but just needed to finish off his good work with a bit more composure. This game will help Fitzy understand what is required at the senior level, and will help springboard him into pre-season.
James Frawley: James produced a solid game against Jay Schulz, who only kicked one goal and had been in very good form. Frawley’s positioning was outstanding, as was his involvement in our counter attacks. He spoilt well in the air, and won some good contests at ground level.
Col Garland: Allowed Brett Ebert to kick some early goals on him, but Garlo shut him down as the game progressed. Col had a big influence on the game offensively, with his switching and aggressive run off half back. He finished the season on a high.
Brad Green: Greeny’s movement around the forward line was good. He provided a good target for his teammates inside fifty, and finished with two goals. He continued to lead from the front with his actions and efforts.
Jeremy Howe: Howey’s work rate was again a highlight. His versatility is a real asset to our team. He was very solid in the air - he used the ball really well and finished with a goal.
Mark Jamar: Mark had 40 hit outs, many to advantage, which set up our midfielders with some dynamic clearances. His knee injury earlier in the season looks to have hampered him a bit with his ability to jump at centre bounce, and has also affected his timing when going for marks around the ground. I’m sure he’ll get this right over summer.
Neville Jetta: Nev was in and out of the game. He did some really good things. His physicality was good. He kicked an important goal, and continues to provide great pressure coming out of our forward line.
Nathan Jones: Nathan, structurally, was probably the best he’s been all year. He worked really hard to provide great connection with his teammates off half-back. He distributed the ball well and kicked two ripper goals. Jonesy finished off a very consistent season very well.
Tom McDonald: Tom played on Justin Westhoff and held him well until late in the game, where Westhoff got away from him. Tom will have gained great experience and belief from his two late games, and no doubt will use the experience to set himself up for 2012.
Stefan Martin: Steffy was really good with his competitiveness. He contested hard in the air. He was solid in the ruck and lively up forward. He took some good contested marks and he kicked two goals. It was another step forward in a year where he has made real progress.
Jordie McKenzie: Jordie bounced back really well after some quiet games. He had 20 possessions and 95 per cent effectiveness with his disposals. He leads the way with his physicality and defensive intent. He kicked two goals, which is a side of his game he needs to develop. We just love the way he plays.
Brent Moloney: Beamer had an outstanding game. He won 35 possessions and had nine tackles. His ability to win the ball at ground level and distribute it intelligently was fantastic. His leadership and aggressive play were highlights.
Cale Morton: Although Cale didn’t have a lot of possessions, his work rate was very good. He kicked a very good goal, and set up some others with some smart use of the ball. Structurally, he has been much better over the past month.
Jared Rivers: Jared was outstanding on John Butcher, who had no influence on the game and didn’t hit the scoreboard. He spoiled aggressively and switched play at every opportunity. Once again, he had a very solid game.
Luke Tapscott: Luke started as the sub and provided good energy and a fantastic smother when he came on to create a goal to put us into the lead in the last quarter.
Jack Trengove: Jack had another very good game. He had 27 possessions, 12 contested, and took six marks. He also kicked an important goal. He put his head over the ball and went hard at it at every opportunity. It was a good way to finish the year.
Jack Watts: Wattsy had a quiet game. He couldn’t get involved in the game as much as we’d like. His tackling was a highlight and he had four scoring involvements. Jack’s made some big steps forward this year, and has built a great foundation for his career from here.
