Jones and Howe sign new deals
Melbourne has re-signed leader Nathan Jones and high-flyer Jeremy Howe for the next three years.
The duo will remain with the Demons until at least the end of 2015.
General manager of list management Tim Harrington said Jones and Howe were important long-term players.
“We are really pleased that we’ve had further proof of players showing their commitment and confidence in the club,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“Nathan Jones is going to be a central part of our midfield for many years to come. His professionalism towards his preparation means he has been a really consistent performer for the Melbourne Football Club. Nathan has missed only two games through injury since making his debut in 2006, which is further testament to his preparation and mindset.
“Jeremy is a highly talented player, who has captured the imagination of all Melbourne supporters. He has shown his versatility in his first two seasons of AFL, playing a variety of roles for the club. We expect he has plenty of improvement left in him.”
Jones and Howe join Mark Jamar, Tom McDonald, Jordie McKenzie and Colin Garland as other recently re-signed Demons.
Jones, who is arguably having his best AFL season in 2012, has played 130 matches since debuting in round 17, 2006.
His durability has been a feature of his career, and he has missed just five matches since his debut.
Jones was originally drafted at No. 12 from Mt Eliza/Dandenong Stingrays in the 2005 NAB AFL Draft.
A dual NAB AFL Rising Star nominee in 2006-07, Jones finished second in Melbourne’s best and fairest in 2007.
Jones has been a member of Melbourne’s leadership for the past two seasons, and has particularly grown in this area during 2012.
Howe, who was named Melbourne’s best first year player last year, has been an exciting addition to the team since he made his debut in round 11, 2011.
He has already become one of the most exciting aerialists in the game, having been nominated for mark of the year several times this season.
Howe’s marks against the Sydney Swans (round eight) and Port Adelaide (round 17) have widely been regarded as the outstanding marks of the season.
Originally from Dodges Ferry/Hobart, Howe was selected at No. 33 in the 2010 NAB AFL Draft. He has since played 30 matches.
