MELBOURNE has ruled out acquiring 2009 Coleman Medallist Brendan Fevola, after the Carlton full-forward was officially put on the trade table on Wednesday.

Tim Harrington, Melbourne's list manager, said the club will continue to top up its talent via the upcoming drafts, quickly ending any link with Fevola.

"The club is developing our list from youth and that wouldn't be the path we'd head down," he told afl.com.au.

Melbourne has all but secured pick No.11 from Carlton in exchange for Brock McLean, and while Harrington has not ruled out acquiring players from rival clubs via next week's trade period, he said adding further selections is the priority.

"[We're] always open-minded and having the first pick in the pre-season draft is a strategic advantage as well," he said.

"We'd never say never about deals and potential trades, so we just want to make sure we set the club up, so it's in a position where we can really build our list."

Harrington said Melbourne does not have a set number of picks it wants to take into the draft.

"I think you've got to be flexible in thought about any particular scenario that can occur," he added.

Meanwhile, Harrington said the signing of Aaron Davey for the next four years was completed smoothly, despite acknowledging some clubs were circling for his services.

"It was just the time-frame [which made it take longer to get the deal done]. He's had a great year and naturally other clubs will come to him with offers, which will make him stop and think," he said.

"But I was always super-confident that he was going to remain a Melbourne player, because he does genuinely love the club.

"There was interest from other clubs – and strong interest – but I was confident he was always going to be a Melbourne player."
