Todd Viney’s season assessment
Mark didn’t reach the same level he did last year, due to a knee injury. He started the season really well, before he suffered a posterior cruciate ligament injury. He came back and struggled for confidence, but then finished the season with some good games. Although his year was interrupted by injury, he is still a key part of our side.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Russian had a fantastic game, winning 29 hit outs. He returned to form and took great confidence from that performance. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Russian was very competitive in the ruck. He won the hit outs with 29. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
Russian was very good with his ruck work. He gave us first use and ended up winning 34 hit outs and had a big influence around the ground. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Rush was very good in the ruck again. He didn’t have as much of an influence in the air, as he has in the past, but he presented up forward and was good. He continually gave us first use of the ball and one highlight was his tap over the back to Rohan Bail, who kicked a goal from a stoppage. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
Russian battled hard against two giants for West Coast - Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui. Mark had 27 hit outs and influenced the game with his tap work in the ruck. Russian remained in very good form and continued to lead by example in the midfield. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
Some of Russian’s taps were outstanding at the centre bounce. His connection with Brent Moloney was amazing. He continued to give us first use in the ruck and he had another really solid game. Russian finished with 40 hit outs. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle

AFL: Round 14 v Richmond
It was great to have big Russian back. His first half was played mainly up forward, with a couple of runs on the ball. Once he got his confidence up, he played more as a ruckman. He had 27 hit outs and influenced the game by giving our mids first use and hit the ball to advantage at stoppages. He gave our midfielders great confidence, and was very important for the synergy of the group. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs
Russian wasn’t bad, but he wasn’t as effective with his ruck work as we would have liked. With better body positioning and another game under his belt, he would stamp his authority on the game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 16 - Bye

AFL: Round 17 v Port Adelaide
While Mark had 37 hit outs, he was probably not as effective as we would have liked. We didn’t get as much advantage out of his ruckwork. He wasn’t away from a standout game, and needed to let himself go. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
The big Russian had 11 possessions and 16 hit outs, which was not what we’ve come to expect from him. He probably lowered his colours on the day. Mark needed to focus on his confidence, and impose himself on the game with his physicality. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats
Mark had a disappointing game and lacked physicality. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 20 v Carlton
Injured: foot

AFL: Round 21 v West Coast Eagles
Russian’s actions and effort were back to what we expected them to be. He contested very well at centre bounces and gave us some effective taps to advantage at around the ground stoppages. He needed to use more of his jump around the ground, instead of wrestling. The only detraction from his game was that he gave away five free kicks. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond
Big Russian had a solid game without being outstanding. He gave us some good hit outs to advantage from his ruckwork, but he needed to get his hands on the ball more. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
Although he won many taps - 39 - we didn’t get the full advantage of his hard work. He took some strong marks around the ground, but he needed to continue to work on his involvement in transition. Mark again built some good form. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Mark had 40 hit outs, many to advantage, which set up our midfielders with some dynamic clearances. His knee injury earlier in the season looked to have hampered him a bit with his ability to jump at centre bounce. He was also affected with his timing when he went for marks around the ground, but I’m sure he’ll get this right over summer. Mark Williams
