Although McKenzie was one of Melbourne’s better players, he said it was a frustrating result to lose by 64 points.
“It was a big game for us, after winning a couple on the trot and we failed,” McKenzie told melbournefc.com.au.
“In the end, we weren’t really competitive and it was really disappointing.
“We’ve got the bye now, but we’ve really got to bounce back the week after.”
McKenzie said Melbourne’s second quarter, when it kicked 2.5 to 4.4 and trailed by 24 points at half-time, was the catalyst in the loss.
“In the second term, we got absolutely smashed at the stoppages,” he said.
“That put our backs under the pump and they’re always going to score when you get beaten by that much in a quarter around the clinches.
“That was disappointing and our pressure wasn’t as good as it has been, so they add up and hurt us on the scoreboard.”
McKenzie said the players will do a thorough review, before regrouping for its round 17 clash against Port Adelaide in Darwin. The Demons have the bye next round.
“We’ll see where we went wrong and learn from it. We’ve got to get back on the track and train well and then we’ve got to focus on Port Adelaide,” he said.
“I’ll do everything I can to freshen up the mind and get the body right over the break. We’ve also got a camp, but I’ll be smart about it over the break.
“The Port Adelaide match will come around quick enough, so preparation for that will start soon enough.”
Despite claiming 26 disposals, McKenzie wasn’t happy with his game.
“No [I wasn’t happy with it]. As a midfield group, we got beaten,” he said.
“I had a few roles going through the midfield, so I was pretty disappointed.
“They got hold of us and they got too much of the ball for our liking, so it’s disappointing and hopefully I can learn from it.”
