MELBOURNE Football Club was saddened to hear of the passing on Wednesday of Peter Szental - director, Foundation Hero and lifelong supporter.

While many great individuals have had an impact on the Melbourne Football Club, over its century and a half of existence, some haven’t kicked the ball on the MCG, or worn the guernsey as the siren sounds. Rather, these people have contributed from the other side of the fence.

Peter Szental was one such individual.

A lifelong and committed Melbourne supporter, he was also dedicated to his wife Lorraine, and his children, Jae and Max.

The founder and owner of the Szencorp Group, Peter’s focus was on water and energy efficiency solutions for the built environment, green property developments and waste to energy solutions. He was a pioneer in his field, recognised for his energy and enthusiasm.

Peter held degrees in science, politics and philosophy, and a Master’s degree in business.

In recent times, Peter had battled cancer. Over the last three months, his condition deteriorated. He passed away on the morning of Wednesday 14 July, leaving behind many who will miss him, and will miss his invaluable contribution to the Melbourne Football Club.

In recent years, Peter’s contribution came through his role in Debt Demolition, when he was one of the driving forces, and amongst the first Foundation Heroes. This was recognised by President Jim Stynes, who said ‘Peter Szental - he’s the person who really started us off. Two years ago, he was one of the last two men standing, and they tipped in a couple of hundred grand each.’

A member of the Governance, Remuneration and Performance Subcommittee, as well as the List Management Subcommittee, Peter was also a member of the Strategic Relationships and Facilities Project Team, playing a vital role in establishing the future of the Club on many fronts.

As Club CEO Cameron Schwab said in recognition of Peter 'he openly expressed the great pleasure the Club had given him since being appointed to the Board two years ago. He talked of the Club as family, and was very proud to be a member of the Board.'

Melbourne coach Dean Bailey also paid tribute to his friend and mentor.

'Peter has been a terrific mentor and mate for me and he’s been fantastic,' he said.

'To lose him is really shattering to be honest, because he’s put a lot of effort and time and passion into the club.

'He’s one of our key board members and his influence around the football club will be sorely missed and I’ll certainly miss him as well.'

Following the team’s memorable win against Essendon in Round 15, and after having spent the game in the coaches’ box, Peter joined Stynes and Bailey in the rooms, where he was acknowledged by Stynes for his great contribution to Melbourne, for being a ‘man who absolutely loves his Dees’ and for being such a wonderful member of the Melbourne family.

We will all remember Peter, and we share the sorrow felt by his family and friends.
