It’s been another frustrating season for you, but the good news is that you’ve played the past two matches for Casey reserves. How have you gone?
SB: I’m just trying to get a bit of match fitness back and gain a bit of confidence in my leg and body, so it’s coming along quite nicely. I played three or four games at the start of the year and had six weeks off and have now been back for two matches in the VFL.
What was it like to finally run out on the ground again?
SB: It was good. It’s been a long time coming. I’ve been at the club for two years and I wish I had have been playing VFL footy last year. So now it’s about gaining confidence through the reserves and working on a few things.
Were you feeling pretty anxious about coming back?
SB: Yeah, I came back earlier in the year and played a few games, but my leg still didn’t feel 100 per cent. But after having six weeks off to rest my leg, it’s come good. I came back against Werribee [two weeks ago] and it felt 100 per cent and even last week, it felt similar against Frankston.
What roles have you played in the past two weeks for Casey?
SB: The majority of the time has been wing and floating across half-back as well. So they’ve been my roles so far.
Do you feel you’ve got on top of the injury now?
SB: I feel as though I’m on top of it. It’s the first time I’ve felt really, really confident about the leg and since under-18 level. There are things I feel like I can do now, whereas earlier in the year, I didn’t have that confidence.
How will you approach the rest of the 2010 season?
SB: I just want to build my fitness up, my confidence and set myself up for a good pre-season - and to play injury-free.
Have there been any early indications in regards to how you will approach pre-season, considering the amount of football you’ve missed in 2009-10?
SB: The fitness guys will probably work me pretty hard, which will be good. It’ll be good to come through with the young guys such as [Tom] Scully, [Jack] Trengove and [Jack] Watts. If we can all come through and play good football together, it’ll be good.
On that, what’s it been like to watch your contemporaries play seniors, while you’ve had to battle injury?
SB: I’m very happy for them to be playing, but the competitive side of you wants to be out there playing with them. I’m really happy for them - they’ll all playing well.
Have you also considered what might have been up until this point?
SB: Yeah, if I hadn’t have broken my leg, who knows what would’ve happen, but my time will come.
Have you noticed any differences in your game since you’ve come back from the broken leg - either earlier in the year or now?
SB: When I first came back from the broken leg and was running, I did feel proppy. I had to train myself to walk properly again. And then I had to train how to jog, sprint and then change pace, so I really had to train the body and mind with my leg. At the moment, I feel as though it’s as good as it was before the injury. It’s the best it’s felt in 12 months.
