COACH Todd Viney says he is relishing the opportunity to guide the Demons, but has reiterated it is just for the interim.
Viney said he had found the job “really exciting” even though he has experienced three losses, including a narrow seven-point defeat to Richmond last round.
“It’s been hard work and you feel like you’re in control and you’re responsible. I’ve really found that to be invigorating,” he said.
“But apart from playing, this is the closest you get to competing and trying to put your stamp on things.
“So I’ve enjoyed that aspect of it, but it’s been really challenging.”
Speaking at AAMI Park on Tuesday, Viney was pressed if his mind could be changed about possibly coaching the Dees next year and beyond.
But he was quick with his reply.
“Talk to me after we win one,” Viney said with a smile.
“This is hard yards and it’s been a really exciting challenge.”
Meanwhile, Viney said he hadn’t spoken to defensive coach Brian Royal, regarding his comments on radio station SEN before last Sunday’s clash against Richmond.
Royal told SEN adamantly that Melbourne would win against the Tigers. His comments were heard - and highlighted - by Richmond during its pre-match warm-up.
But Viney said he was pleased Royal was forthright in his pre-match views - even if the result didn’t eventuate.
“I expect our assistant coaches and players to be confident that we’re going to win,” he said.
“I have no troubles with that.
“If Richmond is relying on that stuff to motivate them, then that’s all well and good, but I don’t think that’s going to last long - that motivation to become a good team.”
