OVER 500 women participated in a variety of activities to join the Club in celebrating women in football at our Round 13 game against GWS.
A highlight was seeing 170 girls aged 5 - 12 take the opportunity to run out on the hallowed turf of the MCG and take part in a clinic or Guard of Honour. The clinic was facilitated by Stef Martin and Kelvin Lawrence, alongside participants from MFC’s Trident Girls Academy - a Club program that develops the skills of female footballers, both on and off the field.
Other activities included a packed out event of high tea and a lap of honour from the VWFL / AFL Victoria Academy and the Victorian U18 State team.
As major sponsors of the Victorian Women’s Football League since 2009, the Club is passionate about promoting females who play, administer and support Australian Rules.
CEO Cameron Schwab said the celebration provided a great opportunity to showcase the input made by women in football.
“We are committed to supporting women and girls playing and administering the game of Aussie Rules,” Schwab said.
“Women and girls playing footy is the fastest growing area of participation in the game. We want all women and girls who play to know that they have the support of the Melbourne Football Club.
“We will endeavour to promote and assist with the growth of women’s and girls’ football, and continue to provide exciting learning opportunities that will develop these players as both footballers and people.”
