FORMER Melbourne skipper Brad Green says that while he was a little shocked to lose the captaincy, deep down he "knew the decision was probably coming."

He told a media conference at the Demons' community camp in Wonthaggi on Monday that his fateful meeting with new coach Mark Neeld lasted just five minutes.

"(I was) basically told we're totally going with youth and a new approach," Green said.

He said that having had an inkling that he would no longer be captain enabled him to accept the decision quickly and offer his support to the new Demon co-captains, Jack Trengove and Jack Grimes, whose appointment was announced last week.

"I feel that leadership group needs some help because they are young," he said. "I'll be around trying to do my best and lead the boys."

Green said his pre-season had not been affected by the constant speculation over his future, as he had expected a new on-field direction would be taken.

"That did not stop me from leading and training hard (and) taking control of the boys out on the track. That won't change. I'll still lead," he said.

Green said he understood the rationale for the decision, but expected to have a significant role anyway.

"I have not had a sit down with Neeldy to go over that role, but hopefully we can have that chat and I can still be a part of what is going on."

He's not waiting for that chat to happen however.

Green has gone on the front foot, immediately offering his congratulations and support to both Trengove and Grimes if they need a hand.

"Initially they (Trengove and Grimes) felt a little embarrassed with it all but I fully support the direction," he said.

"Congratulations to them. They're great young men. They will be outstanding leaders and outstanding men and it will be a privilege just to run out with them."
