Demons mourn star rover Spencer
By Mike Sheahan

STUART Spencer, first rover in Melbourne's team of the 20th century, has died aged 79. He won the best and fairest in the 1955-56 premiership years, then quit the VFL at 24 after 122 games and moved to Tasmania. It was a decision that cost Melbourne arguably the best rover in Australia at the time and him the chance to play in the three Melbourne premierships of the subsequent four years. Spencer played 161 games for Clarence in the Hobart-based Tasmanian Football League from 1957-63 as captain-coach.
