NARRM’S trip to Perth has ended in a frustrating 35-point loss to Waalitj Marawar on Sunday night.
Following a disappointing loss to Carlton last week, the Dees arrived in WA determined to improve upon their recent slow starts.
However, Waalitj Marawar outworked Narrm from the opening bounce, with Demon Christian Salem giving credit to the opposition for their ability to control the game.
“It was pretty disappointing in all phases of our game,” Salem told Narrm Media.
“We were coming here on a mission, and we wanted to get off to a fast start after starting slow the last few weeks, and again, we weren’t quite able to do that.
“It was a heavily contested game, and to [Waalitj Marawar’s] credit, they outworked us in the contest all around the ground.”
Despite entering the game feeling prepared for the Eagles, the Dees were unable to gain first use of the ball and create disruption within their back half.
This resulted in the second half of the game seeing Narrm score just four goals from 13 scoring shots, compared to Waalitj Marawar’s nine goals from 10 scoring shots.
“They got first use and were able to transition the ball throughout their back half a lot cleaner than us,” Salem said.
“They kicked 11 goals from their back third to our one.
“It’s something we’ve got to review and get to work on, because we can’t be letting it become a trend.”
Salem discussed the team’s plan to utilise the rest period over the next few days before Narrm’s clash against Euro-Yroke at the MCG on Sunday.
“It’s something to reflect on and we will get to work come Tuesday [to prepare] for Saints on Sunday,” Salem said.
“We’ve got to get to work, recover well over the next day or two and get in on Tuesday and have a real crack.
“We’ve got to get off to a fast start, train our contest and come back with intensity right from the get-go.
“That’s what will be our focus for the week for sure.”
Sunday’s game is the first time Narrm will play Euro-Yroke at the MCG since Round 8 of 2022, where the Dees collected a 38-point victory, four players registering over 30 disposals, with Ed Langdon having a career-high 39.
