“THAT performance was nowhere near the team we want to be, and nowhere near the team we want to become.”
That’s how Simon Goodwin candidly reviewed his side’s 35-point loss to Waalitj Marawar on Sunday night.
The Dees travelled to Optus Stadium and were unable to keep up with the fast-paced Eagles, suffering their fourth loss of 2024.
"We're really clear on the type of team we are. And I've said it for a number of years about what we stand for as a footy club. And we're nowhere near that today,” Goodwin said post-match.
"There's going to be times in a season where you have periods where you're not playing your best footy, but it gives you an opportunity to grow, gives you opportunity to try things and learn things about your team and your personnel and find a way to be a better team.
"We're not happy with where we sit today. That was a really, really poor performance and we'll go away and address it. We'll find a path forward, we'll have optimism. We'll look at opportunity and come out a better side down the road and that's our challenge."
It was a convincing win by Waalitj Marawar, who seemingly dominated much of the contest from the first bounce.
When looking at the stats sheet, the Dees were up in overall clearances but were unable to convert this through to inside 50s, registering just 36 – the lowest count for the whole season.
“They’ve clearly been able to develop a really strong content-based game and today that was on-show,” Goodwin said.
“They won it for three quarters.
“Their ability to win the contest at both ends of the ground, and their ability to win the turnover game was pretty significant.”
The Dees were able to produce pockets of momentum during the game, keeping to within two goals of the home side, but it was missed opportunities in front of goal that continued to hinder their ability to close the margin further.
Narrm finished the game with just 10 goals from 20 shots on goal.
“It was a little bit frustrating,” Goodwin said.
“We probably could’ve been a little bit closer, we gave up five goals that quarter as well.
“But not converting when you have the momentum clearly puts you under pressure.
“We got ourselves back in the game enough to give ourselves a chance, but to [Waalitj Marawar’s] credit again, they won the territory game and the contest-based game.”
