Todd Viney’s season assessment
Jack played a lot through the midfield. He developed as an inside midfielder and his defensive pressure was very good. His leadership really came to the fore towards the end of the season. Overall, he had a pretty consistent season.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Given his preparation - after hurting his ankle in the pre-season - he got himself up to play a very important role for the team. Some of his contested marks were pretty important and came at key moments in the match. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Jack was solid in the first half, but ran out of gas a little bit in the second half. He made a few uncharacteristic errors. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
Jack was solid without being outstanding. He didn’t have a great influence on the game, but he was good with his five contested possessions. Some of them were particularly influential in the context of the game. Jack also had five inside 50s, which was good. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Jack had a career-best 29 touches. He found space and used the ball very well. He also kicked two goals and could’ve kicked a few more. Overall, it was good performance. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
Jack was used in several positions and provided some good run-and-carry out of the backline. He also used the ball well. Jack built some good form which was really important for our midfield and team. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
Jack’s aggressive tackling was outstanding. He laid seven tackles. His spread, work inside and at stoppages were very good again. It was another solid game from Jack. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 14 v Richmond
Although he didn’t have a lot of the ball, every time he got it, he made the opposition pay. His defensive work was very good. He had seven tackles and was hard and aggressive. Jack finished the game with three very important goals and played his role impressively. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs
Jack was our best player. His physicality was terrific, his work rate outstanding and his ability to read the game a real strength. He had a big impact at stoppage and spread well in general play. Jack had seven scoring involvements and kicked a goal. Mark Williams

This was another terrific game from Jack. He won the ball well and used it to the team’s advantage. His pressure and tackling were outstanding, as was his decision-making and spread. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Jack was quiet and looked a bit flat coming off the Darwin trip, which can happen to young players. He marked the ball well and his involvement in play was effective, but overall he had limited impact on the game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats
Jack had a quiet game and wasn’t involved enough. Mark Williams

Jack fumbled his ball-handling a little bit early in the match, but he worked his way into the game through hard work. He set up some great passages of play later in the match and was part of some great scoring chains. Mark Williams

Jack had another very good game. He had 27 possessions, 12 contested and took six marks. He also kicked an important goal. He put his head over the ball and went hard at every opportunity. It was a good way to finish the year. Mark Williams
