NARRM will be without Harrison Petty this Friday night, as the Dees get ready to face Yartapuulti in the first game of Sir Doug Nicholls Round.
Simon Goodwin spoke to the media on Tuesday morning to talk about Narrm, fresh injuries and Narrm's upcoming match against Yartapuulti.
Harrison Petty Injury
"He's a really important player to us," Goodwin said.
"He's obviously out for 4 to 6 weeks with a mid foot sprain that we're going to be really obviously cautious with.
"We've been able to to play him forward and explore what it's like to have Harrison in our forward half of the ground, and we've been really pleased with what that looks like.
"He does give us enormous flexibility as well, that in game we can move him back at any stage, so that's something that we need to take into consideration around the team.
"But it presents opportunity for another forward to come in and play well whether that's Ben Brown, Tom McDonald, Jake Melksham, we'll sit down once we get through training and look at what those options are."
Christian Petracca Ankle
"He ran yesterday. He'll train fully today," Goodwin said.
"Obviously it's a concern when you've got one of your players limping off the ground at the end of a game, but he just got a rolled ankle late in the game in a tackle.
"But as I said, he'll train fully today and be available."
Christian Salem Return
"He's had a month of full training, so he's prepared for any level of footy," Goodwin said.
"We've just got to make a decision about what's best.
"We've been ultra cautious with him in terms of his build up. He's done a mini pre-season so there's no doubt he's fully fit.
"We'll get through this training session today and then sit down and make a really clear decision about what's the best way forward for Christian, whether that's VFL footy or coming straight back in AFL footy. We'll make that decision later today."
Narrm Football Club
"It’s something that we’re very proud of. There's no question about that," Goodwin said.
"It's the original name for Melbourne from the Wurundjeri people and it's something we embraced last year.
"Narrm is about creating conversation, it's about generating awareness for all people to have conversations about our proud indigenous culture and something we're incredibly proud of as a footy club.
"We were the first club to go down this path and really build this awareness and it's great to see now two other clubs that have really embraced that in Port Adelaide and Fremantle.
"We've got two teams Friday night, they're going to play against each other with proud Indigenous names."
Yartapuulti Match Up
"These are the type of games you look forward to, there's no question about that," Goodwin said.
"You're playing an in-form team that have won six on the trot. You go into their hostile environment, their home ground and there's no bigger challenge in footy and it's one you look forward to as a player and as a footy club.
"We can't wait to get over there, get into it and play some really good footy.
"There's no doubt that when you play a team like Port Adelaide on their home ground, you're going to get an audit into where you sit and we certainly feel that we're ready for that audit and it gives us some great information about where we are in our season, what we need to work on and how we get better.
"But first and foremost we want to go over there and put on a great performance and come away with the four points.
"They're incredibly tough through the middle of the ground, they've added Butters and Rozee through there. They're playing with Scott, Boak and Wines who are really seasoned campaigners but their ability to play the game in the forward half is is really strong. You know they do it to a really high level and they've been really impressive in those phases of the game."
For the duration of Sir Doug Nicholls Round, the Melbourne Football Club will be rebranded and referred to as the Narrm Football Club.
