BALL movement coach Mark Williams runs through the 22 players who played in Melbourne’s win against Gold Coast Suns at the MCG

Clint Bartram: Barty played an outstanding game on the very dangerous Gary Ablett and limited his possessions to 28, with 17 coming from the defensive part of the ground. Ablett had little influence on the game, or the result. Clint just continues to play his role for the team each week.

Jamie Bennell: Jamie was defensively very good. He competed strongly in the air and at ground level. He was rarely beaten one-on-one. His rebound off half back was exciting and started many of our scoring counter attacks.

Sam Blease: Sam was defensively much better. He had four spoils and tackled aggressively. Offensively, he was outstanding. He had seven rebound 50s, 15 handball receives and took the game on at every opportunity. He displayed great composure and used the ball well.

James Frawley: Defensively, James was again very good. He was excellent on Nathan Ablett, who had no impact. His positioning allowed him to take many intercept marks. He had eight spoils and provided good third man up support. Chip was offensively much better, taking the game on with run and carry and switching play at every opportunity.

Col Garland: Col’s defensive game was solid. He had quite a few opponents and won some excellent one-on-one contests. Offensively, he was very good. He had nine scoring involvements and took the game on aggresively with tremendous run and carry.

Brad Green: Brad worked his way into the game. He was spoilt on leads early when marking on his chest. He had five contested marks and also kicked four important goals in a strong display. It was great to see Brad find some space and have a big impact on the game.

Jeremy Howe: He came on in the third quarter and provided a target. Jeremy worked hard, kicked two goals and had nine disposals.

Mark Jamar: Although he won many taps - 39 - we didn’t get the full advantage of his hard work. He took some strong marks around the ground, but he needs to continue to work on his involvement in transition. Mark is again building good form.

Neville Jetta: After a slow start possession wise, Nev won some important balls, particularly in the third quarter and caused many turnovers with his physicality and aggressive attack on the ball and the opposition. He finished the game strongly. Nev had six tackles in our forward half.

Liam Jurrah: Liam kicked three goals in two and a half quarters. He found space by spreading hard forward and kept presenting. He pressed well and caused several turnovers with his chasing, manning of the mark and pressure when the opposition was in possession of the ball.

Nathan Jones: It was another terrific performance from Nathan. He played a really important role on the wing, and was structurally very good. His contested possession was solid as always, as was his ability to be involved in our scoring chains. His work rate and desperation were highlights.

Tom McDonald: Tom was excellent in his first AFL match. Defensively, he was very good. He was only beaten once in one-on-one contests. Offensively, he showed great composure and used the ball well in transition. Tom will take enormous confidence from this very solid debut.

Tom McNamara: Tom played his first game for the year - he’s been in great form in the VFL. He struggled to get involved in the game, and found it hard to find the ball, but when he did, he used it effectively, and was involved in a couple of our goals.

Stefan Martin: Stef was solid without being outstanding. He contested really well in the ruck, and he went forward and had an impact. Stef presented well on leads and his work-rate up the ground was good. He also won some good one-on-ones.

Jordie McKenzie: Jordie had a flat game. He didn’t win the ball as much as he would have liked and had little impact at stoppage. His tackling and defensive pressure was solid as always. Jordie has carried a big load this season and I’m sure will bounce back this week against Port Adelaide.

Brent Moloney: Brent had a terrific game. He won some very good clearances that resulted in scores. He again put his head over the ball, bashed and crashed the ball forward and used his hands intelligently while under pressure. Beamer finished with three goals and probably missed his easiest shot of the day in the fourth quarter.

Cale Morton: Cale played several roles over the course of the day. He was structurally really sound this week. Although he didn’t win a lot of the ball, his defensive intent was good. He must continue to advance that part of his game.

Jared Rivers: Defensively, you couldn’t question his effort. When he was third man in, he didn’t always have an impact. Offensively, he wasn’t in the play a great deal, so he didn’t have much opportunity to win the ball.

Tom Scully: Tom always works hard. Structurally he was really good at stoppage around the ground - we just want to see Tom run and carry the ball more, and finish his good work.

Luke Tapscott: Luke had low possessions, but provided good one-on-one contests and a lot of the grunt work when forward. He had two tackles and put immence pressure on the oppositions defensive transition.

Jack Trengove: Jack was a little bit fumbly early - a little bit off with his ball handling, but he worked his way into the game through hard work. He set up some great passages of play later in the game, and was part of some great scoring chains.

Jack Watts: When Jack controlled the ball, he made good decisions. He won some good contested possessions, but dropped some easy marks that could have elevated the effectiveness of his game. We need Jack to continue to take the game on and impact with his decision making and skills.
