Molly O’Hehir | Pick No.3
Position: Defender | Midfielder
Height: 180cm
The rundown: A tall talent who hails from West Australia, Molly O’Heir is a defender/midfielder drafted from the South Fremantle Bulldogs.
Selected at pick No.3, it’s no surprise that O’Hehir is one of the most impressive players in this year’s draft class, with speed, aerial strength and competitiveness.
She’s played some of her best footy across half-back but has shown her skill and versatility by lining up in the midfield as well.
Todd Patterson | AFLW List Manager: “Molly's a player we targeted from the start of the year,” Patterson said.
“She's super competitive, an elite athlete and one of the most compelling personality profiles I've come across in my time doing it.
“So, we feel really fortunate to welcome Molly and her family to us coming from South Fremantle.”
Maggie Mahony | Pick No.21
Position: Midfielder
Height: 163cm
The rundown: Maggie Mahony is a strong inside-mid drafted from the Oakleigh Chargers who boasts clean skills and power at the contest.
The two-time premiership player averaged 26 disposals and eight tackles per game in the Coates Talent League, in addition to impressing during a VFLW game where she collected 27 disposals, seven tackles and one goal.
A former elite hockey player, Mahony is a strong endurance athlete and possesses the ability to dispose of the ball on both sides of her body.
Todd Patterson | AFLW List Manager: “Maggie's a two-time premiership player for the Oakleigh Chargers,” Patterson said.
“She's also an elite hockey player being in the Victorian pathway previously but this year she really devoted herself to football.
“She's an inside midfielder who can also play half forward, is really low to the ground powerful, nice and clean and has good footy IQ.
“We're really excited to bring her on board and to add to our depth in that area.”
Amelia Dethridge | Pick No.63
Position: Utility
The rundown: Amelia Dethridge was considered the 'draft smokey' of the night, taken with the final pick at selection No.63.
Dethridge is a supremely talented athlete across multiple sports with a long list of junior accolades in hockey, cross-country, swimming and netball.
Despite having not played in the Coates Talent League alongside friend Mahony, she recently spent time returning to the football world through school competitions.
Todd Patterson | AFLW List Manager: “She's a powerful athlete and a great endurance runner,” Patterson said.
“She also has skills for someone who hasn't played the game, which gives us a really good foundation to work off.
“The recruitment process that we put her through was pretty rigorous and quick, and she jumped at every hurdle that we gave her and it's a real credit to her and her family.”
