ST KILDA looks set to take another injury hit ahead of round one with Sam Fisher unlikely to face Melbourne due to back stiffness.

The club released a statement on Monday night saying the key defender had a facet joint injection on Monday, used generally to relieve pain in the back.

The Saints did not rule the 31-year-old out, but it appears doubtful he will play against the Demons, meaning new coach Alan Richardson will be taking an even less experienced side into his first game.

They are already without suspended midfield duo Leigh Montagna and Lenny Hayes, while last year's best and fairest winner Jack Steven will be missing with a foot injury.

Small forward Adam Schneider is also out with a back injury, and Sam Gilbert faces a test on his foot.

Strong midfielder Luke Dunstan is likely to make his AFL debut against the Demons at Etihad Stadium, while rookie midfielder Eli Templeton may also be elevated to the senior list after an impressive pre-season.

The club's first draft pick last year, Jack Billings, is coming off an injury-interrupted 2013 season but pushed his case for a debut with a classy game in a VFL practice match on the weekend.
