ONCE a week, members of the Melbourne Football Club volunteer program band together at the MCG to call unrenewed members, encouraging them to rejoin.

The volunteers’ passion for growing the Club’s membership base was exemplified when long time member, Peter, spoke to a gentleman who had been a member for 66 consecutive years, but could no longer afford a membership.

Peter was touched by the supporter’s situation and upon finishing the call, roamed around the room, collecting donations from fellow volunteers to pay for the supporter’s membership.

Peter said: “There’s no way I was going to let that membership lapse. So I collected the donations from the other volunteers, called him back and said ‘you’ve been a member for 66 years, you’re now a member for 67. There’s no way we are not having you as a member in 2014.”

The supporter was very humble and grateful to have reaped the benefits of Peter and the other volunteers’ generosity.
