History drives true blue Dee Moloney
Midfielder Brent Moloney is inspired by what Melbourne means to him and his new teammates
He was wearing a Melbourne training guernsey from the early 1980s – royal blue, or 'TV blue' to some, with sponsor at the time Hertz splashed across the front.
Not surprisingly, the player was hard-at-it midfielder Brent Moloney, who was a diehard supporter when he was drafted by Geelong in 2002.
Switching to Melbourne in a 2004 trade, Moloney's desire for the red and blue was quickly rekindled.
And he is making sure every new teammate discovers the same passion he shares for the club.
"James McDonald and I started a Melbourne Football Club academy, where we put together a pack [containing] a DVD about the club, the 'Red Fox' book about Norm Smith and the history of the club book, plus a few other things," he told melbournefc.com.au.
"We gave them to the new guys who have rocked up to the club. It really just gives them an insight into the club.
"They could be from WA or Queensland and they might not have barracked for the club, so hopefully when they pull on the jumper it means something to them.
"There is nothing more that gets me going than putting on the Melbourne jumper and running out with 21 of your best mates."
Ahead of last Sunday's season opener against North Melbourne, Moloney revisited Melbourne's past again when former Dees Peter Moore, Nathan Brown, David Williams and Shane Zantuck handed out guernseys to debutants Kyle Cheney, Jake Spencer, Neville Jetta and Jamie Bennell.
"They presented the jumpers to the first-year boys in the room and that was great," he said.
"What Shane Zantuck said was great. He gave a message that really got me going.
"They all gave a bit of an insight into their time at the club and what it meant to them to play their first match with Melbourne."
