COACH Paul Roos has confirmed he won’t coach Melbourne beyond 2016.
After announcing on Monday that he had agreed to take up the option of coaching the club for a third season, Roos also reaffirmed that he would not extend his coaching tenure with the Demons beyond 2016.
“I’ve made it pretty clear, from a family point of view, I won’t be going past the three years,” he said at AAMI Park on Tuesday.
“I think [locking in] the three years gives the club more stability.
“From a succession point of view, it does make it a bit easier to do that and give us some breathing space.”
Roos said he was determined to “get the club to a point where we’re all proud of where it’s at”.
“We’re starting to challenge to be a good footy club,” he said.
He added that being back in the coaching chair was much more enjoyable than he expected.
“I’m doing it for the Melbourne footy club, but I’m enjoying it and I’m doing it for Paul Roos as well.
“I’m loving being here and I’m loving coaching the group and the players. Hopefully we’re taking them on the right path.”
In terms of his successor, Roos said “we’re smart enough to be flexible” in looking at several candidates.
“There are so many different scenarios … the main thing is making sure that from the players’ point of view, we put the right person in who can continue what we believe is on the right path,” he said.
