Todd Viney’s season assessment
Lynden was in and out of the senior side a bit this season. He predominantly played as a forward and as a big-bodied midfielder. Lynden will be looking to consolidate a senior position next season. He needs to have a great pre-season.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Dunny kicked 2.4 from six scoring shots. It was a solid performance from Lynden, although he would’ve liked to have kicked straighter. He needed to capitalise on those opportunities, because he could’ve had a very good day. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
He influenced different parts of the game, but his output was limited, mainly due to opportunities up forward. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
I thought Lynden was in-and-out of the game. He took some good opportunities, but didn’t capitalise on all of them. We need more from him. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Lynden played a really good role for the team. He controlled Nathan Bock for much of the match, but the real strength of Lynden’s game was that he was strong in his position. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
Lynden was our sub. He came on for Jordan Gysberts and kicked a goal. He was physical and played his role with limited opportunities. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
Lynden worked really hard all day. He got into space at times, provided an easy option, which helped us impact the scoreboard. His ruck work was solid and his second efforts after ruck contests were outstanding. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Lynden was used in various roles, but didn’t have a great game. He’s an important player because of his size and his ability to compete. He needed to keep focused on making good decisions. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Suspended

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
Suspended

AFL: Round 10 v Sandringham
Dunny hadn’t played for a few weeks and we threw him around a fair bit. He was in the midfield, and we put him in the ruck at times, against [Nicholas] Heyne, [Justin] Koschitzke and [Daniel] Archer - three recognised St Kilda guys - and he matched it with them. He went forward in the last quarter and provided another target. It was hard for them to match up Dunny and Bater (Matthew Bate), so Dunny was very useful in his contribution I thought. It wasn’t until you looked at the game in review that you saw what Lynden provided - a lot of grunt and a lot of hardness. He really competed with his physicality in the ruck. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 11 v Collingwood
Dunny kicked five goals. We played him more as a forward target this week - we didn’t put him in the ruck or midfield. He took six marks and kicked five goals. He could have kicked another two - they just veered off. So, he had a big game.Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle (emergency)/VFL: Round 12 v Coburg Tigers
Dunny was the AFL emergency, so he arrived as we were about to go out on the ground. It was about ten minutes before the game started, so he got changed and had to warm up. He came on about 10 to 15 minutes into the first quarter. His first quarter was a little bit quiet - he got three touches. His second quarter wasn’t too bad and his third quarter was in between a bit. But in the last quarter I put him on the wing, and he had 10 possessions. He really made an impact and nearly got us across the line. So, I rated him as good. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 13 - Bye

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs (emergency)/VFL: Round 14 v Werribee Tigers
Lynden was our most constructive forward with three goals. He provided a solid target and was a bit stiff not to have more of the ball directed through to him. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 15 v Box Hill Hawks
Lynden worked really hard, but just couldn’t seem to get much of the ball in the first three quarters. He had seven possessions in the last quarter, so he stuck to his guns. It was probably just an OK game, but for a forward, he kept at it, and that was a sign of resilience and a never-say-die attitude. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 16 v Frankston
Dunny had a good game, with 21 touches, six marks and four goals. He also gave Fev (Brendan Fevola) a couple, so he was a very good contributor. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Dunny’s disposal effectiveness was 92 per cent with his 13 possessions. He took some good strong marks by playing in front, and provided a good target at half-forward. We needed Dunny to use his size, strength and aggression more often to break open packs and provide crumbs for our small forwards. He kicked two goals and was steady overall. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats
Dunny provided assists and his carry was good. He also filled in gaps for us. I thought he had a pretty reasonable game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 20 v Carlton
Lynden was solid. He kicked 2.2 and provided a good target up forward and took several strong marks. We used him for a short burst in the midfield on Chris Judd without much success. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 21 v West Coast Eagles
Dunny was good with his leading patterns and spread. He contested well when the ball hit the ground. He followed instructions at forward stoppage, which contributed to our team kicking two goals from this area. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond (emergency)

VFL: Round 22 v Northern Bullants
Lynden contributed nicely to the win with two goals, two behinds, 11 possessions and his strong voice and encouragement. It was his first game back in a few weeks, and he made a very good contribution. Brad Gotch

VFL: Qualifying final v Port Melbourne
Lynden was OK. He kicked one goal and had 10 possessions. There is no doubt that he could have had more impact, both in team involvements and through the middle. Brad Gotch

VFL: Semi-final v Werribee Tigers
Lynden failed to take his opportunities in front of goal, kicking three behinds. However, he kept trying, on what was a difficult day for forwards. Kelly O’Donnell
