Todd Viney’s season assessment
Troy was a great find. He was really competitive in the VFL. He took to it like a duck to water and was hardly beaten all year. Troy’s strong and a great competitor - his nickname is ‘The Beast’. He doesn’t lose too many contests.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Injured - thyroid disorder

VFL: Round 1 v Geelong
Injured - thyroid disorder

VFL reserves: Round 2 v Port Melbourne
Troy got 10 possessions in the first half and looked lively. It was his first game back after a thyroid problem. He had a good crack and looked impressive. It was a good effort, considering his limited training. But for his first game, I thought he showed a lot. Brad Gotch

VFL reserves: Round 3 v North Ballarat
Troy had nine touches, but only played a bit more than a half. But because the reserves won comfortably, he didn’t have to impact much. Brad Gotch

VFL reserves: Round 4 - Bye

VFL reserves: Round 5 v Frankston
Troy played 50 per cent game time. He’s been starting to get some consistency after that thyroid problem. He’s getting better. Brad Gotch

VFL reserves: Round 6 v Northern Bullants
Troy did OK. He’s a developing player and did what we expected. Brad Gotch

VFL reserves: Round 7 - Bye
(Played in VFL practice match)

VFL reserves: Round 8 - Bye

VFL: Round 9 v Williamstown
Troy was a bit of a surprise packet. He came in for his first senior game and played well down back. Troy had 14 possessions and played on Zeph Skinner. He also spent some time on Mitch Hahn and Jarrad Grant. So that was exciting to see Troy play well. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 10 v Sandringham
In his second game, Troy played a very good game.He had nineteen possessions, playing in the back line, and he shut a lot of good Sandy players. He did a good job defensively, and provided a bit of run as well. He’s got some attacking qualities, which is handy, especially heading into the wind. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 11 v Collingwood
I thought he was good. He wasn’t as prominent and dashing as he had been, but he still did some good things. He was again good at keeping his opponent ineffective. So, he was going well. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 12 v Coburg Tigers
Troy was good again. I was really pleased with how he’s progressing. He just finds the footy, and he took some really good contested marks when the ball was in the air.  Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 13 - Bye

VFL: Round 14 v Werribee Tigers
Troy played his defensive role well. He won some one-on-one contests and rebounded with urgency and purpose. He was very steady and consistent in his approach to the game. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 15 v Box Hill Hawks

Troy’s been a real find. He was very good defensively - he didn’t get as much of the ball this week, but his man didn’t have any impact on the game whatsoever. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 16 v Frankston
Troy was good, without getting a lot of the footy. He had a quieter day, but his man had little influence. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 17 - Bye

VFL: Round 18 v Geelong
He conceded a few goals and was moved onto Troy Selwood after he kicked four goals. He then restricted him somewhat. He stuck to his task against great adversity, which was impressive for a young player. He showed he was an unflappable character. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 19 v Sandringham
Troy again showed he was a good young player - he’s really going from strength to strength. He played in a defensive group that didn’t concede a goal in the first half, so it was a very good game from him. He got tired a bit later on, but he put in a fantastic effort. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 20 v Coburg Tigers
Troy had nine touches, three marks and four spoils. He played on different types of players, which was great experience for him. He got caught out defensively a couple of times. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 21 v Werribee Tigers
Troy conceded just one goal late in the game, so he was defensively very good. He won more of the ball this week. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 22 v Northern Bullants
Troy conceded just one goal again this game, so he was very good defensively. He got back to winning the ball more this match, with 24 possessions and took nine marks as well, which created a number of turnovers. Brad Gotch

VFL: Qualifying final v Port Melbourne
Troy was good, battling hard in defence. Unfortunately, he conceded at least three goals and on occasions his kicking options were costly. Brad Gotch

VFL: Semi-final v Werribee Tigers

Troy had a solid performance in the back half. He stood up well under pressure. Kelly O’Donnell
