Although it’s unknown how long Rivers and Garland will spend in attack, Grimes said their physical attributes, plus their defensive skills added plenty for the Demons.
“They provide versatility and they helped out Clarky (Mitch Clark), who was a main target down there,” he told melbournefc.com.au.
“It’s good to have a couple of big talls down there - they can take a grab. The thing that’s great about them is that they can bring the high ball down to ground and provide a contest - and that’s the backman coming out in them. They’ll spoil the ball and get it down to ground.
“Riv was clunking a few and kicking a few goals and Garlo always looks dangerous, so it was good that they kicked a few when Clarky went off.”
Reflecting on the 78-point win over Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Sunday, Grimes said there were several encouraging signs.
“The most positive thing was that we were under the pump early and they came out really hard,” he said.
“Credit to them, their first quarter was right at us. We came at them as well and then came out on top at the first quarter. After that, we just built from there.
“It is GWS’ first year in the comp, so credit to them. They really have a crack and it takes some beating.”
Grimes said it was important Melbourne reinvigorated its second half of the season, after a poor first half of 2012.
“We really look at it like that - it’s the start of a new season and everything starts again,” he said.
“It’s been a good start today, but one game doesn’t make a season, so we’ve got to make sure we keep building like that and finish the season off well.
“There were good signs, but it doesn’t mean anything if you do it for one week and not the next, so that’s the main focus.”
Grimes, who continued his impressive recent form, said he was enjoying his recent push into the middle.
“I’m still trying to adjust in the midfield a bit and I’ve still got a number of areas I need to improve on to become a consistent midfielder,” he said.
“It’s a bit different to the backline, but I love it in the midfield and I’m hoping to create a bit of versatility, where I can go back or play in the middle and do both roles as best I can.”
