COACH Mark Neeld says the hype and noise that was directed towards former Demon and now Giant Tom Scully was all “part of the theatre that is AFL footy”.

Speaking after his side’s 78-point win over Greater Western Sydney at the MCG on Sunday, Neeld indicated it was simply gamesmanship.

“These guys are professional, full-time AFL players and the reality is that players change clubs all of the time and coaches change all of the time,” he said.

“Players and coaches come and go and the fans don’t, but it’s good theatre to be honest.

“The stuff that was said pre-game is what it is, and we’ll play our little part and the fans will play their part and away we go.”

Meanwhile, Neeld said he was unsure how long defenders turned forwards Colin Garland and Jared Rivers would last in attack, despite the duo kicking seven goals between them against the Giants.

“There’s a certain structure we want to play to and for this week, those two guys served those guys really well,” he said.

“Footy evolves pretty quickly - I’m not sure whether they’ve got long-term positions there.

“But the thing that I can say is that modern footy and the ability to play a number of roles within a game is really important, and if we can develop that as a club, it makes it better for us moving forward.”
