Newton hooked on winning feeling
Michael Newton says a commitment to playing out every man allowed Melbourne to hold on to record its first win of 2009
Newton said the nature of the victory, achieved after an excellent first half from the Demons, added to the sense of achievement.
"It was a good win and it was a great feeling out there. We all played together well and it all seemed to work well for us," he said.
"There hasn't been many times in the last couple of years where we've been in that position, so up at three-quarter time was very exciting. The boys were pumped.
"Personally, I ran out of legs a little bit, but it was good the boys were able to finish out the game and we had a big focus before the game to run out every minute."
Newton, who played his first match for the season and just his 17th for the Demons, booted two goals from six scoring shots.
He also showed some encouraging signs against the Tigers and said his confidence grew as the match progressed.
"It was good to get my hands on the ball inside 50," Newton said.
"I've got to practice my goalkicking this week and I'll be better for the run. I've just got to be more confident with my goalkicking – that's the main area for me to work on.
"If I get a couple of marks early I feel comfortable and I feel comfortable if I'm working hard, so I get confidence from that."
Having been out of the side, Newton said he wanted to make the most of his opportunities.
"I had a pretty good pre-season and I didn't miss much at all – if any," he said.
"I played a couple of games in the pre-season and I was unlucky to miss out early, but I worked hard at Casey and I'm loving the chance to get back in the side."
