Dees re-sign three prime youngsters
By Mike Sheahan

THREE of Melbourne's prime youngsters have reaffirmed their faith in the club's long-term future, despite the turmoil of recent weeks. Midfielder Jack Trengove has extended his commitment until the end of 2015, defender Luke Tapscott to 2014 and ruckman Max Gawn to 2013. The contract extensions were announced to Melbourne's most influential supporters last night at the club's Foundation Heroes dinner. Trengove, who turns 20 next month, was contracted for 2012 under his original contract, but wanted to make a stand on behalf of the club in troubled times. "The club's treated me really well since I've been here. It's a great club to be a part of and we've got a really good list, so I had no hesitation in signing when they offered it to me," he told the Herald Sun.

Dees see stars as Trengove signs on for four years
By Martin Boulton, Michael Gleeson

JACK Trengove has signed a long-term contact with Melbourne tying him to the club until the end of 2015, a move described internally as sending a strong message to the rest of the players. In a welcome piece of good news for the Demons, the 19-year-old midfielder and former No. 2 draft pick was one of a trio to recommit to the club announced at a special fund-raising dinner last night. Luke Tapscott extended his contract until the end of 2014 and ruckman Max Gawn inked a new deal tying him to the club until the end of 2013. Trengove and Tapscott each had a year to run on their existing contracts, but list manager Tim Harrington said the extensions were ''a huge boost'' after the recent turmoil that saw coach Dean Bailey dumped. The signings were announced at last night's Foundation Heroes dinner in the city, where former captain Garry Lyon, who has stepped in as interim football director, delivered a speech.

Trengove in show of faith for Demons
By Stephen Rielly

MELBOURNE has lost games by huge margins, its coach and not a little credibility in the past fortnight. Yesterday, however, the Demons took some steps back on the path of steady progress they veered from by signing some of their best young talent to long-term contracts. Jack Trengove, Luke Tapscott and Max Gawn have all signed, with Trengove and Tapscott agreeing to new deals even though they were not due to come out of contract until the end of next year. Trengove has added three more years to his stay, which means he is tied to the club until the end of the 2015 season. Tapscott has added two years, meaning he is contracted through to the end of the 2014 season and Gawn has signed on until the end of 2013. In an uncertain time for Melbourne, which is looking for a new coach and football director, and an unusual time for the game with two new teams joining the competition, the signings are strategically and symbolically important.
