THE NAB AFL under 18 championships are well under way.

Rounds four and five will be held in Melbourne, with the fourth round starting this Friday.

Each match will consist of a division one team (South Australia, Vic Metro, Vic Country and Western Australia) playing a division two side (New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory, Northern Territory, Queensland or Tasmania).

The division two teams have struggled to be competitive against the division one sides this year, unlike two years ago, when we saw New South Wales beat Vic Country in Sydney.

We’ve had one round of division one teams up against division two sides. On each occasion, the division one teams have won by a significant margin. We might expect that to continue in round four with a match on Friday night and three games on Saturday, all at Visy Park.

Then we look towards the biggest day on the recruiting calendar on Wednesday June 30.

In terms of games to view, watching all states/territories play on the one day, at the one AFL venue at Etihad Stadium - probably with the roof closed - and in good conditions is great to watch.

Every recruiter in the land will be in attendance and a lot of AFL coaches and their coaching staff will be watching prospective draftees going around.

Most AFL clubs will have some sort of idea about who they may or may not draft and they’ll seek some opinion from their coaching groups, in regards to those players on the day.

It’s always good for coaches to come along, because when you start talking about players to draft and show more vision at the end of the year, they’ll be able to remember back to when they watched a particular player on the day.

The first three rounds have been played all around Australia. We’ve been to Blacktown twice, Adelaide, Perth, Darwin, Tasmania twice (Hobart and Launceston) and Brisbane last weekend. So it’s been a busy schedule over the past five weeks.

It’s coming towards the end of a long campaign in terms of the championships, but immediately after they finish, we’ll turn our attention to Blacktown again for the NAB AFL under 16 championships.

From a Melbourne perspective, we’ll get to watch prospective father/son Jack Viney play for South Australia, so we’ll be watching his progress with interest.
