Todd Viney’s season assessment
Luke played quite a few games this year. He’s a bull-at-the-gate player. Luke played off the half-back line, where he hadn’t played before. But because of his elite kicking skills, we played him down there and he impressed. He’s still learning the game and it remains to be seen if he will be a defender or forward long-term. He’s still got a lot of improvement, which is exciting.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Tappy had a really good debut. His kicking was outstanding and he showed he would continue to develop and fit into the backline. He was very good in his first match. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
In his second game, Luke was very good. He had 23 disposals and had a real crack. It was another solid performance after he impressed in round one. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
Luke was solid. His attacking game was really good and he laid six tackles, which was very good. He just needed to continue to work on the defensive side of his game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Lukey’s attack on the ball was very good. He won several one-on-one contests at important times in the game. His kicking continued to be a highlight. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
Luke was solid and continued to gain valuable experience on the elite smalls in the competition. He used the ball very well from half-back. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
Luke’s attack on the ball and pressing to defend was outstanding again. He continued to get better each week. His ball use was precise and he helped set up many of our forward thrusts from back transition. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Lukey was a bit quiet this week. He had 13 possessions, but his ability to influence the game with his ball use was evident. He continued to gain valuable experience playing with the other backs, which helped the synergy of the group. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Luke started well, but got injured early in the game, which was disappointing. He was missed in the backline. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
Injured: hamstring

AFL: Round 11 v Essendon
Injured: hamstring

AFL: Round 12 v Collingwood
Injured: hamstring

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle
Injured: hamstring

AFL: Round 14 v Richmond
Injured: hamstring

VFL: Round 14 v Werribee Tigers
Luke covered the ground really well, considering he had been out of action for several weeks. He got penetration with his kicks, which was important, although a couple were scratchy. Brad Gotch

VFL: Round 15 v Box Hill Hawks
We played Luke more in the midfield this match, because he had been playing down back at senior level. We just thought we’d build his fitness, and get his body strong body - those conditions suited him. He had 22 possessions, and we actually pulled his game time back a little bit in the last quarter, so we didn’t overcook him. This was with a view to him returning in the senior team the following week, plus Melbourne was travelling. So that cost him a few more touches, but he was still very good. Brad Gotch

AFL: Round 17 v Port Adelaide
It was great to have Luke back in the team. Early on, he was a bit loose defensively, but his intensity and attack led to opposition turnovers, which helped us score. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Luke was very aggressive at the ball and the opposition. He provided some exciting passages of play. He continued to balance his game between attack and defence. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats
Luke was poor defensively. But he had a real crack at putting his body on the line, while he tackled and chased ferociously. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 20 v Carlton
Lukey needed to improve the defensive aspects of his game. His attack on the ball was fantastic, as was his physicality. But he was injured late in the game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 21 v West Coast Eagles
Tappy was solid defensively. He didn’t have any goals kicked against him and he dropped off well at stoppages. He still needed to work on pressing up in transition. Offensively, he didn’t have a great impact. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond
Injured: hip

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
Luke had low possessions, but provided good one-on-one contests and a lot of the grunt work when forward. He had two tackles and put immense pressure on the opposition’s defensive transition. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Luke started as the sub and provided good energy and a fantastic smother when he came on. He also created a goal to put us in the lead during the last quarter. Mark Williams
