BALL movement coach Mark Williams runs through the 22 players who played in Melbourne’s loss against Richmond at the MCG

Clint Bartram: Clint did a great job on Trent Cotchin. It was a big job on a really good player. He stuck to his task all day and limited Cotchin’s effectiveness.

Jamie Bennell: Jamie did a great job on Robin Nahas. He held him to 11 disposals. Jamie’s defensive game was solid. His positioning was good and it was great to see him put his head down and play his part for the team.

Sam Blease: The attacking part of Sam’s game was exciting. His style reflects the way we want to play, but he needs to continually work on his defensive game and his involvement and concentration.

Aaron Davey: He didn’t involve himself in the game nearly enough. He made some poor decisions structurally and with the ball. Aaron was reported and subsequently suspended for a week.

James Frawley: Chip was good in one-on-one contests. He was aggressive, but needs to keep counter-attacking, backing himself and taking the opposition on.

Col Garland: Garlo had a very effective game. He dropped off defensively very well taking several intercept marks. He started many scoring opportunities with his run and carry and use of the ball off half back.

Brad Green: Greeny was our sub, after he missed the previous week. He came on the ground and made an immediate impact. He got split on his opponent and was unfortunate not to have registered a couple more goals.

Jeremy Howe: Jeremy had a quiet game, not involving himself enough in the play or working hard enough to give himself opportunities to win the ball or make his defender defend.

Mark Jamar: Big Russian had a solid game without being outstanding. He gave us some good hit outs to advantage from his ruckwork, but he needs to get his hands on the ball more.

Liam Jurrah: Although Liam kicked three goals, we need to see more defence from him. We need to see him competing harder for the ball. He could have had a much greater impact, if he involved himself in the game, as his decision making and ball use continually sets up scoring opportunities.

Nathan Jones: Jonesy played with plenty of energy and endevour. He just needs to keep working on his disposal effectiveness. If he can get that right more times than not, we’ll score from his passages of play.

Joel Macdonald: Joel was beaten on the day by Brad Miller. As always Joel’s physicality and intent was good, but his execution and positioning on occasions let him down.

Stefan Martin: Steffy competed well in the ruck. He had some good hit outs, but wasn’t involved in general play as much as we would’ve liked around the ground. Stef needs to be more physical and take the opposition on when in possession of the ball.

Jordie McKenzie: As always, Jordie was aggressive and determined to win the ball. He won some really good in-and-under ball. Jordie continues to progress and follows the coaches’ instructions to the letter. He’ll continue to get better as he gains more experience.

Brent Moloney: Again, Beamer had a specific role to play for the team. He carried out that role very well. He was still able to win plenty of the ball, with 25 disposals. He involved himself in attack and defence, which was pleasing. He was very strong with his contested possessions.

Cale Morton: Cale had 21 disposals and took some good strong marks. He kicked the ball inside 50 four times. Cale must continue to go forward when he wins the ball and needs to use his tank more to involve himself in the game. We need him spreading hard both ways.

Ricky Petterd: Ricky did a defensive job on Bachar Houli, which he did very well. It was great to see him put his head down and work hard for the team. He had limited impact on the game because of this.

Jared Rivers: Jared defended really well one-on-one and continued his solid form from the past month. He needs to keep leading from the front. His switch of play and ball use started many of our counter attacks. His intercept marking over the past month has been a highlight.

Tom Scully: Sculls had 16 disposals, but only five kicks. He was a little bit fumbly and got hurt in the middle of the game, which affected his run. Again, another run under the belt will be greatly beneficial to his conditioning and touch.

Colin Sylvia: Col played an outstanding game. He had 29 disposals and won plenty of one-on-one contests. He also made an impact on the scoreboard, with eight inside 50s and five goals. That’s the type of performance we expect from Col, but unfortunately he won’t be playing for the rest of the season, due to suspension. The way he played on the weekend is the way we know he can play.

Jack Trengove: Jack had another solid game. He reads the game so well and puts himself in the right spots to win and distribute the ball. He uses the ball very effectively and he had an impact when he went forward, kicking two goals.
Jack Watts: Wattsy was a little bit quieter than he has been in the past month. His work-rate wasn’t up to his normal standard this week. His ball use was also down a little bit. He kicked one goal.
