Melbourne's Tom Scully set to miss a further six weeks with knee injury
By Matt Windley

IN a further blow to Melbourne's woes, Tom Scully has been ruled out for at least another six weeks with a knee injury. A six-week layoff has blown out to at least nine weeks after the club confirmed it would be taking a cautious approach to Scully's rehabilitation. The Greater Western Sydney target struggled with knee soreness in the pre-season. After being diagnosed with a bone stress in his left patella before Round 1, the No.1 draft pick in 2010 was ruled out and appears unlikely to return before Round 10. "Tom is going to be a long-term player for this club, so we are being conservative with the view to ensure a smooth return," Melbourne football chief Chris Connolly said.

Scully out for six weeks
By Emma Quayle

CONCERN for Tom Scully's rare knee injury has prompted Melbourne to rule the talented onballer out for the next six weeks. The Demons had hoped to have Scully available in the next week or two, but have extended his rehab program to make sure he is absolutely right when he does return and also to ease the pressure on him. Scully, diagnosed earlier this year with bone stress in his left knee patella, has spent the past four weeks undergoing hyperbaric treatment, non-weight bearing training and has also had an infusion injection designed to strengthen the bone. While he has progressed, Melbourne's general manager of football Chris Connolly said the Demons would not consider playing their No. 1 draft pick until absolutely convinced he was ready. Scully underwent knee surgery two months before becoming a Melbourne player at the 2009 draft but was untroubled by it last year, missing only one game. ''We're taking a very conservative approach. If it turns out he can play before then, we'll reassess it, but there's no point rushing him,'' Connolly said.

Melbourne Demons hit by Tom Scully rehabilitation setback
By Greg Denham

MELBOURNE'S chances of playing in its first finals series since 2006 took a nosedive yesterday with emerging midfielder Tom Scully ruled out for at least another six weeks. What was initially diagnosed as a four-week lay-off, could now be closer to three months for Scully, who developed soreness in his left knee last month. Entering his second season, the No 1 national draft selection of 2009 was diagnosed last month with bone stress in his left patella following scans of his knee. Experienced club doctor Andrew Daff said at the time he was hopeful of Scully returning to play within four weeks. However, his rehabilitation time may stretch out to the middle of the year despite a treatment of injections and hyperbaric-chamber recovery.
