TRADE week is underway at Etihad Stadium on Tuesday, with list manager Tim Harrington saying the picture will become a lot clearer of how the week will unfold by the end of the day.

All clubs are now meeting about possible deals, but Harrington said Melbourne will have a better idea of what could unfold after it has caught up with each club.

“We’ve previously met with all of the clubs in the lead up to trade week via meetings in Melbourne and at the Draft Combine,” he told melbournefc.com.au.

“Today (Tuesday) is furthering any information with all of the clubs and that might give us a bit more insight into whether there are realistic chances of deals being made between others and between us with other clubs.

“We’ll get a better feeling of whether clubs will use their compensatory picks this year - and that’ll have an implication for how our second round pick might slide out.

“At the moment it’s at pick No.32, but it might slide out to No.36 or No.38, if clubs decide to use those compensatory at the end of the first round this year. We’ll get a clearer view on that position by the end of today.

Harrington said the extended exchange period, which continues over the weekend this year, will also add another dimension.

“Generally, the first day is just a spreading of information and it’ll be interesting to see how much progress is made in the first few days of trade week this year, given it is now seven days, rather than the normal five. It now concludes on Monday,” he said.

“The weekend will be interesting for clubs to see if they can try and get everything done prior to the weekend or whether it will be a last minute scramble, which is often the case.”

With Gary Ablett already secured by Gold Coast and no bigger name player like Chris Judd or Shaun Burgoyne on the trade market, Harrington said that aspect was also another difference this year.

“The one difference this year is that there is no one big player, who is putting his hand up to leave his club necessarily,” he said.

“Justin Sherman is one person who has gained the most interest, but whether he stays, because he is in contract for two more seasons is an unknown.

“But at the minute, it’s about finding out more information, so as the day progresses we’ll find out more.”
