THE LOVE for the Melbourne Football Club is not limited to Australia, with four international teams securing their alliance to the Club. One of those teams, the Boston Demons, is entering its thirteenth season of wearing the red and blue.
From having to convince Americans that AFL is a ‘real sport’, to finding a ground to play on, the Boston Demons have overcome many hurdles to keep their club alive. One challenge was easily overcome when, thanks to New Balance, the Melbourne Football Club was able to solve the issue of getting playing jumpers by supplying the Boston Demons with a complete set.
Made up from a mix of Aussie expats and Americans aged from 18 to 45, the team has been described as a ‘dynamic bunch’.
Boston Demon Michael Sheppard said, “It is great to watch expats find a new family with the club, and for Americans to learn this great game, its values and mateship. Our relationship with Melbourne gives our American players the belief that this is more than just a game, and is actually part of a larger entity.”
The Boston Demons are also proudly entering their second season of having a women’s team, which also competes nationally.
To further strengthen the bond between the Melbourne Football Club and the Boston Demons, Melbourne and Boston are officially recognised as sister cities.
The Boston Demons’ season is from April to October, and sees them travel to Nashville, Philadelphia, New York City, Montreal and Cincinnati.
