Dropped Dees stung into action
By Jake Landsberger

MELBOURNE caretaker coach Todd Viney could be forced to wield the axe for the second week in a row after his dumpings dazzled in Casey colours as the Scorpions smashed Sandringham yesterday.  Liam Jurrah was one of five Demons to finish screaming out for a recall and could swoop on the out-of-form Matthew Bates's place for the match against West Coast on Sunday. Jurrah flourished in a creative role after being given licence to run the lengths of Casey Fields and wowed onlookers with his pinpoint field kicking. He booted three goals, two from long range, and set up another pair of majors with his gut running and tackling efforts. Colin Sylvia proved his class was too much for the VFL. Sylvia played a sacrificial role in the first half, negating Zebra aces Marcus Marigliani and James Magner at the stoppages. He then unleashed in the second half, finishing with seven tackles and capped a workmanlike game with a goal from 50m with his 16th disposal.

Williams plays it cool on Demons
By Jesse Hogan

ELEVEN months after declaring himself a keen candidate to coach Essendon — to no avail — Mark Williams is being much more restrained about the present senior coaching vacancies. Within hours of the Bombers sacking Matthew Knights as coach, Williams, whose premiership-winning stint at Port Adelaide ended badly earlier that season, said the Bombers were a "sleeping giant" of the competition and that it would be "fantastic if the opportunity [to coach them] came my way". His enthusiasm was futile as Essendon eventually confirmed widespread industry suspicion that it had settled on favourite son James Hird as Knights's successor. Despite now being back in full-time employment as senior assistant to Kevin Sheedy at Greater Western Sydney, there is speculation that Williams is among the obvious candidates to succeed Dean Bailey at Melbourne. While Sheedy yesterday reiterated his admiration for Williams's coaching ability — he described him as "one of the best coaches in Australia" — Williams gave no indication he was desperate to snare another official senior coaching role. "I'm really happy with what I'm doing here. That's the way it is," Williams told ABC Radio. Asked specifically about what his reaction would be if he were contacted by the Demons' hierarchy, Williams replied: "I'd say that I'm working for the Greater Western Sydney Giants and enjoying it."
