Viney may throw hat in the ring
By Rod Nicholson

TODD Viney may be a genuine candidate to step up from his caretaker role to seek the full-time coaching position at Melbourne next season. Viney says he has enjoyed the five-week experience as caretaker and would seek feedback from the players and club officials after the Demons' final match against Port Adelaide to assess his chances. "I have really enjoyed the five weeks and although it has been a challenge, I have enjoyed the responsibility," the former Demon star said. "It has been different from what I thought it would be and I'm keen to get this last game over and then keen to get feedback from the players and the club. "I'll see where it goes. "But I would be prepared to sit down and discuss it," he said. Viney, who said on taking the caretaker job that he had no interest in being a full-time coach, said he had "pretty good communication with the players".

Dees chase Lyon, as Viney eyes job
By Jon Pierik

THE intrigue over who will coach Melbourne next year has deepened, with confirmation Ross Lyon has been approached while caretaker coach Todd Viney has backflipped and appears likely to apply for the position. Lyon's management at Elite Sports Properties yesterday said the Demons had made inquiries, although there had been no serious discussions. There has been speculation the Demons had offered Lyon a five-year contract, as they had done to Alastair Clarkson, who last week opted to re-sign with Hawthorn. It's believed the Demons would prefer an established senior coach to mould a playing list and football department that needs direction and one that could lose three out-of-contract players - skipper Brad Green, forward Colin Sylvia and emerging midfielder Tom Scully. Lyon is contracted until the end of 2012 but has been encouraged by Robert Walls, the man who helped install him as coach of the Saints, to look at any offer from the Demons' football director Garry Lyon.
