MELBOURNE coach Dean Bailey says the club will do all it can to help find departing Demon Russell Robertson a new AFL club.

Although Robertson will play his final match with Melbourne in round 22 against St Kilda – in what should be his 228th game for the club – the exciting forward wants to continue his AFL career elsewhere next year.

"If he wants to carry on and if we can help him get to a club … then great," Bailey said at the MCG on Thursday.

"I don't think any of us will be standing in his way."

Bailey was full of praise for the way Robertson has conducted himself in his two years at the club.

"He's very heart on the sleeve, he's very open and he's very honest. His integrity in the last couple of weeks, but from when I first walked in the door, he's been first class," he said.

Bailey said Robertson's achilles injury was severe and it took a huge effort to get back on the field.

"His rehab and his work, just to get back and play, I can guarantee you it just astounded the medicos and the physios – they were surprised he got back so early," Bailey said.

"He's very determined and he wants the chance to play again.

"And if he gets that chance, we'll shake his hand and we'll wish him all the best, because he's given everything to the Melbourne footy club."

Whatever Robertson's future holds, Bailey is adamant he will make the most of his opportunities.

"I wish him all the best. He's a great bloke, he's flamboyant and he's exciting," Bailey said.

"He was unique in what he could do and he is a unique character and it's great that football clubs and football allow those characters to come out.

"Whatever Russell puts his mind to he'll give it 100 per cent and won't look back."
