Summary

A draw against Collingwood on Queen’s Birthday may have been an epic encounter, but the two points came with mixed feelings. Collingwood had 10 more scoring shots, but Melbourne kicked more goals, forcing the first draw between the two teams since round 13, 1957. The Demons now have four and a half wins entering round 13 - their best result to this point of the season under Dean Bailey. But the Dees face another significant challenge - overcoming its AAMI Stadium hoodoo. Cameron Bruce is the only current listed player to feature in Melbourne’s most recent win at the venue, some nine years ago. It has a genuine opportunity to end its poor record this round, given its improved form and Adelaide’s tough season. The Crows have been rocked by injury and poor form. It opened the season with six consecutive losses and has produced a topsy-turvy win/loss record in its past six rounds.

Players to watch
Melbourne - Brent Moloney: The hard-at-it midfielder produced an outstanding match on Queen’s Birthday, winning a career-best 38 disposals. He continued to team strongly with ruckman Mark Jamar, with his clearance and contested possession particularly impressive.

Adelaide - Kurt Tippett: The key forward played his best match for the season against Hawthorn in Launceston last round. He kicked four goals from seven scoring shots and caused the Hawks plenty of headaches.

Memorable match
First qualifying final, 1998, Melbourne 17.13 (115) d Adelaide 9.13 (67), MCG
One of the most memorable meetings between the two sides came in the 1998 finals series. Adelaide, then the reigning premiers, came up against a Melbourne side full of enthusiasm and running in the first qualifying final. Twelve members of the Melbourne side were playing in their first final ever. The scoreboard read Melbourne 6.6.42 to Adelaide 2.2.14 at the end of the first quarter. Jeff White was dominating Shaun Rehn at the centre bounces, and the run of Melbourne's midfield gave it total control. In defence, Jamie Shanahan limited Tony Modra to just one goal, while Anthony Ingerson, playing his 100th League game, put on a much anticipated display of defensive marking. After the long break, David Neitz treated all to a goal kicking display, kicking four in the third term. At one stage, Melbourne was ahead by 51 points, and at the end of the quarter, the margin was as it would be at the end of the day - 48 points, and through to a first semi-final showdown with St Kilda, grand finalists the year before.

Foot in both camps
Danny Hughes, Clay Sampson, Anthony Ingerson, Matthew Collins, Peter Vardy, Trent Ormond-Allen, Nick Pesch and Scott Thompson

What Dean says …
“Our form in AAMI, from a history point of view, is not very good but there’s nothing like the present to change it. We had a good win up in Darwin and there’s no reason why we can’t go over there and be more than competitive on Sunday.”

Key Melbourne question
Will Melbourne end its 13-game losing streak at AAMI Stadium and win make it two from two on the road this year?
