Ricky Petterd looks at some of the players’ weird and wacky superstitions they carry into matches
IN THIS column I did some investigating into some of the boys’ weird and wacky superstitions they carry into games.
Growing up, it was always something I was interested in and thought was amusing.
I remember asking my dad what his were. A large pizza and the same old raggedy red jocks were always a must for him.
As I went around and asked a few of the boys, I got some interesting responses. Some I cannot repeat and others you do not want to hear!
Lynden Dunn has always been a ‘different’ one, so I know I would get a good answer from him.
He lays out three pairs of jocks that he has a good feeling about. Then he gets his fiancé Leah to select to the lucky ones for the day.
Pretty fair to say she would either praise or blame when the game’s finished!
It's funny some things you don't notice about your teammates on game day.
For example, every game Addam Maric has played he is always the last to run out, either through the banner or out of the tunnel.
He has been doing this since his junior days, when he was running around at Greenvale.
Brent Moloney and Rohan Bail have similar superstition - their house has to be spotless before leaving for a game.
Mark Jamar goes for a walk and jog around his local park before every game in Melbourne.
Think you would all agree whatever gets the big fella up is obviously working!
There are a lot of boys who have to wear the same jocks or speedos week in, week out.
I'm pretty superstitious myself. I do two big jumps as soon as we run out onto the field.
The most unusual thing I do, which is something I don't know how it started and it's a non- negotiable for me when I run out is, I must rip some crêpe paper off the banner and rub it onto my jumper. Weird I know!
Hope this gives a little insight into how the boys prepare, even if it is a little different!
