Todd Viney’s season assessment
Nathan had a really consistent year. He was really durable and we tried to simplify some of his decision-making. We thought structurally he played his roles really well for us.

Round-by-round assessment
Comments made by 2011 Melbourne coaching staff members Mark Williams, Brad Gotch and Kelly O’Donnell

AFL: Round 1 v Sydney Swans
Nathan played his role. He was on the wing and covered the ground well. He was good in some one-on-one contests. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 2 v Hawthorn
Nathan played multiple positions and had a reasonably even game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 3 v Brisbane Lions
Nathan was very good. He left nothing in the tank and his aggression at the ball was fantastic. He won more disposals this match, with 27 touches. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 4 v Gold Coast Suns
Nathan had a really good game. His positioning off the wing was fantastic and the way he ran and carried the ball was strong. It was another good display from Jonesy. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 5 - Bye

AFL: Round 6 v West Coast Eagles
Nathan produced another solid game. He played his role for the team and had an impact because he worked really hard on the training track and stuck to his task on match day. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 7 v Adelaide Crows
Nathan’s physicality was outstanding and he played to structure very well. He had another fantastic game, collected 28 disposals and turned several 50/50 contests into wins for our team. Nathan also used the ball well and again hit the scoreboard with one of the fine goals of the year. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 8 v North Melbourne
Nathan was again in outstanding form. He played the game on his terms and his physicality and effort was excellent. His adherence to structures not only helped the team, but assisted his performances. He played with great spirit and led by example. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 9 v St Kilda
Nathan produced another solid performance. He gave us great drive and kicked inside 50 seven times. Nathan won plenty of the ball and was continually involved in the game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 10 v Carlton
We had to use Jonesy in defence, where he was solid. He won plenty of the ball, but needed to get the most out of his disposals. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 11 v Essendon
Nathan helped set up some important passages of play. Jonesy’s toughness was evident again - he continued to be hard and tenacious and play his role for the team. He was in really good form. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 12 v Collingwood
Nathan was continually involved in the game. His consistency was due to his work rate. He needed to move the ball quickly and make good decisions when disposing the ball. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 13 v Fremantle
As always, Nathan’s work rate was outstanding. His attack on the ball was great. He continued to work hard and do the right things for the team. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 14 v Richmond
Nathan had a very solid block of form. He continued to improve with his structural play. His ball use was again significant and his ability to cover the ground was a great asset for our team. His confidence was contagious and really helped those around him. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 15 v Western Bulldogs
Jonesy made a few basic mistakes that we hadn’t seen in his game for several matches. He continued to lead the way with his spirit and voice. He won the ball well inside, and continued to provide great connection for the back line to use. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 16 - Bye

AFL: Round 17 v Port Adelaide
Jonesy was solid again, and good on the dangerous Danyle Pearce. He was still able to win his own ball. His pressure was good, and he kicked an important goal. He was in a very solid block of good form. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 18 v Hawthorn
Nathan was quiet early, but worked his way into the game as it progressed. He used the ball pretty well, and provided great connection for his teammates to use through handball receives. Nathan also had three scoring involvements. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 19 v Geelong Cats
His endeavour was good and so was his physicality. But he didn’t have an impact on the game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 20 v Carlton
Nathan’s physicality and attack on the ball was a highlight. He stuck to his task all day, and had 21 disposals and six scoring involvements. He continued to grow as a leader and displayed fantastic spirit and fight. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 21 v West Coast Eagles
Jonesy’s endeavour and determination could not be questioned. We love the way he attacked the ball. He had another solid game structurally and possession wise. There were just a few turnovers that detracted from his game. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 22 v Richmond
Jonesy played with plenty of energy and endevour. He just needed to work on his disposal effectiveness. If he got that right more times than not, we would’ve scored from his passages of play. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 23 v Gold Coast Suns
It was another terrific performance from Nathan. He played a really important role on the wing, and was structurally very good. His contested possession was solid as always, as was his ability to be involved in our scoring chains. His work rate and desperation were highlights. Mark Williams

AFL: Round 24 v Port Adelaide
Nathan, structurally, was probably the best he’s been all year. He worked really hard to provide great connection with his teammates off half-back. He distributed the ball well and kicked two ripper goals. Jonesy finished off a very consistent season very well. Mark Williams
