For those who have not come across Twitter, let me explain.
It’s a website, where people can create an account and keep their ‘followers’ up to date on their movements, in the form of status updates.
Whether these updates come daily, twice a day or weekly, some people such as Kim Kardashian (the American Reality TV star) have accumulated 4.4 million followers, while movie star Ashton Kutcher has a meagre 5.4 million (LOL, which means Laughing Out Loud)!
Although not as well publicised as Facebook or MySpace, Twitter has made huge steps and is gaining popularity towards becoming the biggest social network websites.
It gives fans or interested onlookers the opportunity to follow and keep up to date with what certain people are up to.
I follow a variety: from sportspeople, celebrities, journalists (for the breaking news) and most importantly my teammates.
Speaking of teammates, here’s an insight into some of the Melbourne boys on Twitter (in brackets is their username)!
Sam Blease (Sam_Blease): “Just got tagged playing Casey 2’s, had 20 and kicked 2 in the first half”
Bleasey is very new to the world of Twitter and seemingly jumped on the bandwagon, purely to be part of it. No doubt will step up his game and provide entertainment for all.
Matt Bate (Bater06): “Been playing guitar all arvo, trying to become a rockstar like Pete Murray”
Bater’s tweets usually include something about his musical talent and guitar playing ability; a very talented musician just developing his Twitter for when he becomes a full-time music man.
Michael Newton (newto29): “Not many good marks taken this year... YouTube my mark of the year in 2007 and see how its done”
Juice provides plenty for his followers with entertaining tweets, which usually involves a cheap shot at one of his teammates, often including Danny Hughes, Ricky Petterd, John Meesen and even myself.
Daniel Hughes (hughesy_53): “Everyone welcome @ColSylvia to twitter”
John Meesen (TheMeesiah): “Good win by Casey today. My coaching got them over the line”
Since taking on the role of Casey ruck coach, Meeso has developed a great mind for the job. Not only does he talk to you like a coach, but also includes coach-like quotes in his tweets, which makes them quite funny to read.
Ricky Petterd (Rickypetterd15): “Holla to all my Goldy Boys ... Loving T-Pain’s new song; so gangsta!!”
The Eminem of the footy club, Ricky is the whitest gangster going around. He loves his rap and any tunes, which come straight from the streets of Brooklyn. As well, he has a great appreciation for man-love!
Nathan Jones (nathan2jones): “Great day at the club today, learnt a lot, now looking onto the Hawks, big week on the track”
Jonesy is the club’s Twitter king. With nearly 3000 followers, he has the most by about 2500! He provides great insight into the club for supporters and followers of the mighty Dees.
So as you can tell, Twitter provides a bit of fun for the players and more importantly gives an insight into the life of an AFL footballer for the supporters.
I encourage those who read this to jump on www.twitter.com and create your own account. Start following others or simply jump on and take a look at what some of the Demons players, including myself are getting up to.
Before you feel like you’re intruding a bit on our personal lives, Twitter is predominately a public forum - everything is for all eyes to see. At the Demons, we are encouraged to provide this insight for fans and followers to enjoy - led by fellow Twitterers Jim Stynes and Cameron Schwab!
Get on board and have a look, hope you enjoyed my tongue-in-cheek look at my teammates’ Twitter accounts! :)
