ON TUESDAY, the Demons ventured to Geelong’s ‘Leisurelink’ water park as a part of the 25th annual Berry Street camp.

Melbourne players James Frawley, Clint Bartram and Jack Fitzpatrick were the special guests.

The trio quickly made a splash with the kids - ‘Chippa’ impressed them with his water pistol squirts, ‘Barty’ went at full pace down the water slide, and ‘Fitzy’ was able to stand up in the deep end!

The players signed plenty of autographs and had their pictures taken with the youngsters.

The Berry Street kids had a great day with the Demons, making it a memorable occasion for all.

Although the kids relished the opportunity to participate in the water activities and camp, it was also a timely reminder of the harsh reality that there is a shortage of foster carers in Victoria.

This camp was designed to provide the hard working foster carers and their natural children with a week’s retreat. It was also an opportunity for adults to participate in some training, and learn from other carers.

According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, the number of children in out-of-home care has more than doubled compared to 10 years ago, with the numbers at 31,166 across Australia in June 2008.

As the number of children requiring foster care continues to increase, so does the number of carers leaving the system. There has also been a significant decline in the number of people applying to become carers, which further highlights the issue.

Melbourne is proud to be a long-term partner of Berry Street, which does outstanding work to help children and teenagers who have suffered hardship.
