Demons ready to do deal
By Jay Clark
MELBOURNE wants to use part of its Tom Scully compensation to add another nugget to its emerging midfield brigade. The Demons hope to strike a double blow in the trade period as they pursue an established key forward and future onball star. They inquired about out of contract Collingwood forward Chris Dawes, but withdrew when the Magpies said Dawes was going nowhere. Dawes is tipped to sacrifice a big pay day to sign at Collingwood under new coach Nathan Buckley. Trade week could still be a success for Melbourne if it can snare one of the four sought-after 17-year-olds through a trade with Greater Western Sydney. As part of their start-up concessions, the Giants can auction off picks to be used on up to four players born January-April, 1994. The Giants will assign the picks to the highest bidders on Thursday. While Gold Coast is in the box seat to land the top pick, Jaeger O'Meara, Melbourne is well-placed to secure North Ballarat midfielder-defender Brad Crouch.
