Moloney was overlooked for this year’s leadership group, which surprised many. However, the tough midfielder said he wouldn’t change a thing for 2012.
“I was disappointed when I found out. I had a real focus to move on quickly and just keep doing what I’m doing,” he told melbournefc.com.au after Melbourne’s 48-point loss to Port Adelaide at AAMI Stadium on Friday night.
“[I wanted to] keep leading the way and trying to get the boys up for every training session of every week.
“So nothing really changes for me and I believe you don’t really need a title to lead and I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing.”
Reflecting on the loss, Moloney said Melbourne’s slow start proved costly in the wash-up. But he said the Demons were now eager to get into the “real stuff”.
“I thought after quarter-time we got ourselves together and nearly ended up outscoring them,” he said.
“We’ve just got to get our start of the game right. It’s something we can focus on leading into round one.
“We fought it out and got challenged a few times and we put some scoreboard pressure back on them. They were pretty good and I was pretty impressed by the way they played.”
The passionate Demon said he was ready to go for 2012, after building steadily over the pre-season.
“I’ve been progressing as the weeks have gone on. I put in a good night tonight, so I’m cherry ripe for round one,” he said.
“I didn’t miss too many sessions and I did about 90 per cent of the sessions. I’m probably as fit as I’ve ever been, so I’m looking forward to 2012 and hopefully it can be a good year for the Demons.
“We’ve got a few things we want to work on and you want to get your body cherry ripe for round one [against the Brisbane Lions] at the MCG.”
