Positional changes good for the future
Cale Morton says the club's decision to give players new roles will help the long-term development of the team
Morton, who has played all over the ground this year, featured down back against North Melbourne on Sunday, during his side's 62-point loss at Docklands.
Although he earned praise from Bailey post-match, Morton said the positional movements, which came under the microscope following Melbourne's kick-after-the-siren loss to Richmond last round, was developing the players to be more rounded.
"Externally there has been a lot of talk about the Melbourne footy club and internally we lost the match [against Richmond in round 18] after the siren, so it's not often that happens – probably only once a year or once every couple of years," Morton said after the loss to the Roos.
"The fact that people played in different positions and it's just something that the coaching staff has recognised as something for down the track. That's the reality of it and you've got to do the best for the team.
"All of the players have been really good and really positive about it all and have accepted the challenge of playing in different positions."
With the match failing to reach any great heights, Morton conceded it may have looked a lacklustre game due to the time of the year, the youth of the team and experiments being utilised.
"It's probably how it looked, because it's late in the season and we're going through a development phase at the moment and we're giving guys a go in different positions, where they probably haven't played this year," he said.
"It's all about building flexibility and versatility in players and making them become better players over a longer period – it's all about the big picture in a few years time."
