MELBOURNE coach Dean Bailey believes Jack Grimes' debut match against Richmond at the MCG on Sunday will benefit him heading into his second pre-season.

Grimes, selected at No.14 in last year's NAB AFL Draft, played his first match after battling back/groin injuries for much of the season.

"To be fair to Jack, we played him ahead of time. He's a kid who's got a really good future and I want him to have a taste of what AFL footy was like before the year finished," Bailey said post-match.

"He's come a long way since the start of the year and he got a couple of possessions, but for him just to play and get through the game [will be beneficial].

"He's got a very good analytical mind and he's a very good reader of play and this is the type of game – that for him – will build him for next year.

"He knows how difficult and how hard it is today and it'll be a real shot in the arm for him, for next year and I'm sure that after today and tomorrow, he'll really look forward to actually ensuring that he's ready to go."

Grimes finished with five disposals and spent much of his ground time on fellow first-year Richmond midfielder Trent Cotchin, who was teammates with the Demon at the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup last year.

Meanwhile, Bailey praised Adem Yze's efforts against the Tigers, after he played his final match with the club – his 271st.

"He tried hard today. He had a couple of opportunities, but he's been a 300 [official] game player and he's got great credentials," Bailey said.
