MELBOURNE defender Daniel Bell says he wants to remain a Demon and has no intention of returning home to South Australia.

Bell, who was drafted by Melbourne at No.14 in the 2002 NAB AFL Draft from Glenelg, told melbournefc.com.au, he was eager to continue with the Demons, despite "its ups and downs" along the way.

"I've played in a couple of finals, one [win] against St Kilda and that was one of the highlights and I've also got to play on some of the good players like [Gary] Ablett and [Jeff] Farmer and not many people get to do that, so it's been a good journey," Bell said.

"I love living in Melbourne, so I can't see myself moving back [to South Australia]."

Bell, who has made his name down back, is also keen to push up into the midfield in the near future.

"This pre-season I might have to say to 'Bails' [Dean Bailey]: 'I'd like to do a pre-season in the midfield, because there is a lot to learn in the midfield', and even if I don't play there, it'll be a step forward," he said.

"Maybe I'll be able to play there the next year but first, I need to get my body right and work from there."

Long-term, Bell also has aspirations of joining Melbourne's leadership group.

"It's something to aspire to and I'll definitely help out the younger guys and see what happens in the next couple of years," Bell said.

"I think everyone who comes to the club does have [leadership aspirations], but for me, it's more about a confidence thing – I don't generally speak up as much as other people, but I try to lead by example, by chasing and doing the one percenters.

"I think for the younger guys I can be a little bit of a role model, but it wouldn't be anytime soon that I'd be in the leadership group. I've still got a lot to learn and I've got to get on top of my own game, before I start worrying about the whole team."
