Demons wind up football review
By Stephen Rielly
MELBOURNE'S unusual pre-season, rather than post-season, review of its football department has been completed. Chief executive Cameron Schwab said yesterday that the work of the management consultants hired to analyse the department was being drafted into a long-term strategic plan likely to be put before the board mid-year. The Demons raised eyebrows in the summer -- particularly with coach Dean Bailey coming into the last year of his contract -- by embarking on the review when most clubs are fully focused on the approaching season. But according to Schwab, the project is an attempt to look into the future and with more insight make important strategic and commercial decisions that could last for "four or five years". Coaching, recruiting, sports science and welfare were all examined, as were practices at other clubs and in other sports.
Humiliation hardly the answer to dealing with alcoholism
By Patrick Smith
BRENT Moloney was vice-captain of Melbourne. After the club's round three match against Brisbane, Moloney got pissed. Very much so. He cannot remember the night but the club denies he urinated on a bar at some night spot. To his relief. For this excess Moloney was paraded before the media like some creature only marginally short of war criminal status. He apologised to everybody he has remotely come into contact with over his 27 years. Friends, family, teammates, cats, dogs, supporters, kindergarten teachers. He was prompted to admit he had a drinking problem though he didn't drink very often. It was just when he was on the turps it occupied his attention fully. Naturally there was the mandatory mention of counselling. This was not an apology but a humiliation.
