MELBOURNE coach Neale Dahiher says Brock McLean could return from injury to face West Coast this weekend.

"He's in the mix. We'll make up our mind after training today; he's not far away," Daniher said.

Russell Robertson also trained with the team but will play VFL this weekend as Daniher said he is "wary of bringing too many players back at once".

Despite a winless start to the season, he is optimistic about the prospect of travelling to Perth.

"We're really energetic … we believe we're on the up. We're going over to the west to win. We believe we're a chance. We look forward to training this morning in the rain. We haven't done that for a while," Daniher said.

"I think there were a lot of good signs last weekend. Aaron Davey was fantastic, Cameron Bruce played well and got us back in the game when he was moved on the ball. Travis Johnstone was probably in his best form for the year. I think Jeff White's going really well. We just got David Neitz back in the team and Brad Green, they'll only get better."

Daniher says he also takes comfort from the performance of his younger players in last week's defeat to the Bulldogs.

"Col Sylvia probably played his best game for the club. Matthew Bate's playing really well. There are a lot of signs that we're getting better each week. The scoreboard hasn't done us any favours yet, but everyone realises we're on the up."
